Beginning this Sunday, we will begin a four week series on “TREASURE.” This will be a time for us to consider our stewardship of resources and how we support the mission and ministries of our church. I know some folks cringe a little when the conversation turns to money. For some of us, money is a “taboo” subject. Never mind that we gladly pay hundreds and thousands to enjoy a Titans season or a Predators season. Never mind that we spends thousands on multiple vacations a year or an extra few thousand to get the “premium package” for our new car.
I am not suggesting you and I should not enjoy any of these things. To the contrary, I think we should. My question for those of us who get a little uncomfortable when the church wants to talk about money is this: why are you uncomfortable? What is it that gives us that little “cringe?”
I’d like us to explore that during these next 4 weeks. We will base our series on the 6th chapter of Matthew. There we hear Jesus tell us HOW we should offer our gifts, ask us to EXAMINE where our hearts and treasures are, help us to understand WHY we cannot serve both God and wealth successfully, and in the end not to WORRY because everything is in God’s hands.
In the 16 months I have been your pastor, I have watched many examples of generosity among you and I have come to know you as generous people. I firmly believe generosity is one of the most important characteristics in a faithful person and I also know that generosity begets more generosity. Let me ask you—have you ever met a person that was a generous person who was unhappy? Me neither.
Soon you will receive a letter from me with an Estimate of Giving Card included. We are pointing toward Sunday, October 29, as our COMMITMENT SUNDAY. It is my hope that we can all try to be present that day to offer our support for the church for 2018. I know some of you may be traveling and need to be away. Please know that we will gratefully receive your Estimate of Giving Card anytime between now and the 29th.
Now, here are my two requests for all of us. First, this is OUR church—all of us. Because of that I hope and expect that we will all submit our Estimate of Giving Cards. These cards are exactly what they say they are—an estimate. We know things can happen during the year—unexpected expenses AND unexpected windfalls. We know you will adjust for either case. Second, Please do all you can to move toward the biblical standard of giving—the tithe. Are you moving toward the 10%? Not quite able yet? How about considering a ten percent increase in your giving this year? That would be a good symbol of your desire to tithe and I dare say will move you closer to it.
I hope you will try to be with us these next four Sundays of Stewardship.
