During the last week of this month, delegates from across the United States and the world will gather for a special called session of our General Conference of the United Methodist Church for the purpose of coming to a decision regarding our church’s stance toward same sex unions, ordination for gay persons, and how open our denomination will be moving forward. In fact, this conversation is called “The Way Forward” and it is one of the most important moments in the history of our church.
In order to try and ensure that all of our church members and participants are fully informed of what is before us, we have scheduled a “Church Family Meeting” on Sunday, February 17th, immediately following the 10:30 worship service. A light lunch will be provided. Donations are voluntary. At this meeting we will lay out the proposals that will be before the delegates and give a brief history of how we arrived at this moment and what it might mean for our congregation.
I have already circulated among the adult Sunday School classes to give an overview of the General Conference. This Church Family Meeting is our attempt to speak to all those who may not be a part of an adult Sunday School class. Of course, those members who are in those classes are also welcome to attend.
We will field questions from the group and we will do our best to answer all questions, but this will not be a “debate” on the topic. We know there are faithful persons who disagree on this topic and our goal is to honor one another’s opinions and show respect, even in disagreement.
We hope you’ll take the time to join us for lunch on the 17th. Please send an email to Sam@bellemeadeumc.org to let us know you will attend so we can have plenty of food available. If you cannot be present, we hope you will be in prayer for our delegates and our Church.
