Counseling Center Marks 2 Years

September 1 marked the second year of the Counseling Center at Belle Meade United Methodist Church.  Though I am legally not a part of the church, I have felt very welcomed and at home here.  It is a blessing to interact with the staff and volunteers regularly.  I have felt welcomed by others as they have come into the building during the week or encountered me at worship services I have attended.

Looking Back

Since September 1, 2017, with the support and encouragement of BMUMC, the Counseling Center has grown rapidly and accomplished much.  In 2018, I added a second counselor, Cara Lindell.  The church worked with me to secure a grant from the Golden Cross Foundation to supplement counseling fees for those 65 and older and I have been able to become a provider for Cigna insurance’s non-Medicare plans.  Cara and I have provided over 1400 sessions of counseling and more than 250 of those sessions were done with members of BMUMC including 23 first sessions provided free of charge.  We have provided over $7800 in additional financial assistance for counseling to members of BMUMC.  I have provided almost 70 hours of clinical supervision and dozens of hours of case consultation for local therapists and clergy.  I have provided hundreds of hours of pre-marital counseling and I have had the honor of doing at least 2 weddings for pre-marital clients.

A Place for All

The majority of the clients that come to our center are not members of BMUMC.  Many of these clients are not regular church members anywhere.  It is a blessing to help make the church building a place where all are welcomed and help people develop into all that they were meant to be.  I cannot imagine a better setting to do the work that we are doing, and I am so grateful for the past two years.  I pray that we might enjoy many more years of ministering to our community together.

If you would like to, stop by and visit with us sometime.  We would love to give you one of our ceramic travel mugs.  Thank you.
