Adult Bible Study: A Novel Way of Life

Just the other day someone said to me, “I never read anything but nonfiction. Reading fiction feels like a waste of time.” As a lifelong reader of both fiction and nonfiction, I’m always surprised when I hear this. I do read nonfiction books to learn something about the topic covered. But over and over again I am surprised and delighted by what I learn from fiction. Over the 3 weeks of this class, we will talk about the impact of reading fiction on our values, our actions, and our faith. The novels I will specifically reference will include: “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin; “The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper” by Phaedra Patrick; “There, There” by Tommy Orange; “The Beautiful Mystery” by Louise Penney; “We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter” and “The Whole Town’s Talking” by Fannie Flagg. Participants are invited to bring their favorites and contribute to the discussion on the power of books!
